Someone starts a drawing, folds the page, passes it to his/her neighbor who continues the drawing without looking at what is there, refolds it, passes it again, and so on - one piece of a drawing after another, without anyone knowing what came before or what will come after. A game that everyone played as a child and that was enjoyed by many Surrealist artists of the early 20th century, such as Joan Miró and Yves Tanguy who called it by the literary name
cadavre exquis, or exquisite corpse.
The event organized at the
Tramshed, the old tram depot in Shoreditch, East London, heart of the London Design Festival, is entitled
"Draw No Conclusions." Moleskine is providing accordion-style Japanese sketchbooks,
pens and
pencils.
The game will be led by Sam Grawe, former editor-in-chief of Dwell Magazine. Participants include artists, designers and illustrators ready to be inspired by the creative, dreamlike madness of the Surrealist movement.
