The idea comes from Polish artist Pawel Althamer. Title: Draftsman's Congress. The installation is part of the Seventh Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, dedicated this year to the link between art and politics.

Pencils, charcoal, brushes, paint: there are no rules, the only thing that matters is the honesty of one's ideas. The Congress will continue throughout the Biennale, growing day by day with drawings. Special sessions will be held by the artist, including one organized for Moleskine in which artists and the public use drawings to "discuss" the major conflicts that have affected the world during the last decade.

The same open platform concept returns in the Moleskine special edition, designed by Althamer: a black notebook with a white space silk-screened on the cover; the cover is also a blank page. Created by Cameroonian artist Bili Bidjocka, it consists of a series of eight volumes that travel the world collecting the marks of handwriting as we know it. The setting is Lagos, 11 million inhabitants, the heart of Nigeria and Africa's largest and most modern metropolis. The event comprises a multidisciplinary exploration of the African diaspora through theatre, masquerades, visual arts, music, symposia, poetry slams, and films.

This year the Festival will be held at Freedom Pÿk, the former Broad Street Prison, a notorious symbol of slavery and oppression, now converted into a space open to the public.

In homage to the Festival, Moleskine has created a special edition which will be given as a gift to the artists and guests in Lagos, including the poets of the "Coffee-Table Collection", Nigerian filmmakers whose works will be shown, and exhibiting photographers.

Each year the Festival focuses on a specific region of the world. Usually these are writings that we keep in a safe place because they have great sentimental value. And often they turn out to be useful many years later.

To give these university notes the dignity they deserve, different schools from around the world have decided to include classic Moleskine notebooks in their welcome kits for new students: from the Università Ca' Foscari in Venice to the School of Visual Arts in New York; from Berklee College of Music in Boston to the large academies and business schools of Oxford and Harvard.

These notebooks and journals with specially created covers and bands, in a variety of sizes and colors, are work tools for taking notes, organizing ideas and content, summarizing concepts or outlining projects for an exam. They are blank pages for writing, underlining and highlighting that you can go back to again and again to re-read and study. Years later, long after university has ended, you can can hold these same pages in your hand and leaf through them, following their evolution.

Here is a brief selection of "university" notebooks from around the world:

School of Visual Arts - New York Università Ca' Foscari - Venice

Berklee College of Music - Boston Harvard Business School - Boston

Oxford Business School - UK National University - Taiwan
