Young Guns 6

yg6490.jpgADC Young Guns is a global, cross-disciplinary portfolio competition that identifies today's vanguard of young creative professionals. Launched in 1996 by the Art Directors Club, the premier organization for integrated media and the first international collective for creatives in advertising, design, interactive media and communications, the ADC Young Guns roster now counts six classes of exceptional talent. Past winners include designers Stefan Sagmeister and James Victore, AKQA's Co-Chief Creative Director Rei Inamoto, photographers floto+warner, and illustrators Deanne Cheuk and Alex Trochut, who all received the award in the early years of their now-thriving careers.

Winners claim the iconic ADC Young Guns Cube and have their work exhibited at the ADC Gallery and published in a limited-edition book. In 2008, for the second time, ADC looked to Moleskine to publish the hardcover, pocket-sized volume, which features groundbreaking work from the 50 winners of the ADC Young Guns 6 competition. Each winner chose three projects to be featured within the book's full-color pages.

Earlier that year, ADC and Moleskine had teamed up to launch The Undiscovered Letter, a creative challenge developed to raise awareness about the non-profit literacy organization lettera27. The challenge was open exclusively to past ADC Young Guns, who were asked to conjure up the 27th letter of the alphabet. Participants were encouraged to do away with boundaries and interpret the concept freely. Every participant was given a Moleskine notebook to develop his or her ideas, and was asked to submit one final project. 27 finalists were selected, and the top-ranked project by Tiziana Haug (ADC Young Guns 5 winner) was named the 27th letter. Winning work was collected in a soft-cover, full-color pocket notebook.


The ADC Young Guns 6 book and The Undiscovered Letter volume were packaged together and unveiled at ADC's holiday party in December 2008. They are sold online at the ADC store and at several ADC events throughout the year. In addition, Chronicle Books will be distributing the two volumes in bookstores nationwide. As of 2009, the once-biennial ADC Young Guns competition now calls for entries annually and remains open to visual communications professionals age 30 or under. Past ADC Young Guns jury the work and choose the 50 creatives that join their ranks each year.
