Watch Rogier Wieland Create A Paper Wonderland

How do you rabbit-proof a set made entirely of paper? This question and others are answered in the Making Of video of Rogier Wieland 's stop-motion animation for the Moleskine Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Limited Edition Collection.

The video shows just how painstaking the process of papercut art, stop-motion animation and training a live rabbit can be, and how expertly Rogier Wieland and his team executed the 1-minute short.

In his own words, here's Rogier talking about the "forest scene", in which you can see paper rabbits "walking" across the shot.

We started by filming a live action walk cycle of the rabbit. We printed the frames on paper, glued them onto cardboard, cut them out and glued a small grey painted wooden sticker at the back to make them stand. With each new frame we added another paper bunny and that made it look like the rabbit was walking and leaving a "paper echo" behind her. We ended up making 80 of these rabbits. This part of the scene is all about playing with time / freezing time, recalling the eternal tea time which the Mad Hatter and his friends are caught in.

At the end of the scene the rabbit disappears into a notebook that seems to contain a staircase. In fact we had built a small staircase that we cut out of paper and glued to a wooden hall construction, leading the rabbit to her cage where she loved to sit. We did one motion-controlled shot of the rabbit jumping up the stairs. Then we replaced the stairs and the hall with only the open notebook and did another motion-controlled shot. On the computer we put both shots on top of each other and erased the hall that was glued to the staircase. That's how to make a rabbit disappear inside a notebook.
