A new way to work, create and study: a specially designed notebook, pen, and app that work in tandem to instantly digitize notes and sketches made on paper, creating digital text and images that can be edited and shared immediately with a phone, tablet, or laptop.

The Smart Writing Set is a system made up of three elements that make it possible to edit and share what you create on paper in real-time without taking a photo, uploading files, or scanning documents:

  • The Paper Tablet, which comes either in black or red feels like a notebook but is purposely designed with extended rounded edges to look like a tablet.
  • The Pen+, a slim, aluminum pen with a hidden camera that traces and digitizes everything you write.
  • The Moleskine Notes App, where written notes and sketches are stored and can be shared, exported, edited, and searched.

The new set of tools builds on the legacy of Moleskine, which was born as a celebration of the small black notebooks used by thinkers, artists, and writers of the past who wanted to create freely in the streets, at cafés or when travelling far a-field. The Smart Writing Set was developed for today’s  digitally connected creative professionals, knowledge workers and students who want to take advantage of the creative and learning power of developing ideas on paper first.

We see demand for our paper-based collections grow in double digits year after year, showing the continued relevance of paper in the digital age”, says Arrigo Berni, CEO of Moleskine. “On the other end we are well aware of all the advantages of digital, for editing, curating and sharing. This is why we see analog and digital as a continuum.”

RED PAPER TABLET: A FEISTY NEW COMPAINION FOR YOUR SMART WRITING SET. The Red Paper Tablet is the latest addition to the Smart Writing Set. Whether you write or draw your thoughts, having a Paper Tablet with a bright red cover is a way to distinguish between different projects, private vs. work, urgent vs. perdurable, creative vs. analytical. The bright red cover will stand out on your desk and help you collect and organize your ideas.

A NEW GENERATION TABLET, MADE OF PAPER. The inner pages of the Paper Tablet, designed by Giulio Iacchetti, project beyond the cover giving it the distinctive rounded edge typical of digital tablets. Both a playful ploy and an invitation to project ideas beyond the boundaries of paper, the Paper Tablet features thick paper ideal for both writing and drawing. The paper is made with NcodeTM technology patented by NeoLAB Convergence, a grid invisible to the naked eye is hidden in the paper and enables the pen, powered by Neo smartpen, to recognize where it is on the page and within the notebook.  THE LATEST WAY TO CURATE AND SHARE. Digital notes and sketches created on the Paper Tablet are stored in the free Moleskine Notes App for iOS and Android users. Written notes can be stored in handwriting or transcribed into digital text so they can be exported, edited or searched. Notes can be shared in various file formats to other applications and devices including Google Drive and Evernote .

AN ENHANCED WAY TO WORK. With the Smart Writing Set you can create offline first, using your hand to eye coordination and reducing digital distraction. Thoughts can be drawn on paper and refined in the app. Notes can be handwritten in a meeting and sent as a PDF attachment to your team back at the office with a tap of the pen. Sketches can be shared in real time or turned into a just-in-time presentation.

Giulio Iacchetti (born 1966) combines professional activity with teaching in various international universities. With the Moscardino, the multiuse biodegradable kitchen utensil he was awarded the Compasso d’Oro prize in 2001, together with his former studio partner Matteo Ragni. This object became part of the permanent design collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In May 2009 the Milan Triennale held a solo show of his work entitled “Giulio Iacchetti. Disobedient Objects”. Starting form 2011 he designed for Moleskine various collections of Pens, Pencils and Bags.

Moleskine as a brand was created in 1997, inspired to bring back the essential, nameless black notebook used by famous writers and artists like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Bruce Chatwin that was long out of print.
Today, the Moleskine brand encompasses a family of objects: notebooks, diaries, journals, bags, writing instruments and reading accessories, to enhance productivity and creativity in our nomadic lives.  The home office in Milan, Italy includes wholly-owned subsidiaries, Moleskine America, Inc. (established in 2008), Moleskine France (2013), Moleskine Germany (2013) and Moleskine Asia Ltd (2011), which controls Moleskine Shanghai and Moleskine Singapore.
