Yuval Avital

Yuval Avital

Born in Jerusalem (Israel) in 1977; composer, and director of multimedia and multicultural projects; classical guitar player. Yuval Avital's work sets out to create a bridge between old and contemporary, between simplicity and complexity. The combination of traditional modal music, world music and post-serial atonal music forms a brand new music language with profound connections with different cultures. His compositions exploit both eastern and western traditions, as well as contemporary experimental techniques, such as randomness and heterophony. Avital graduated with distinction from the Music Academy and Institute of Contemporary Music of Jerusalem. Between 2003 and 2006 he frequented the Angelo Gilardino School. Since 2008 he has been studying for an MA at the Giuseppe Verdi Academy of Music in Milan, Department of Composition and New Technologies, under the tutorage of Professors Xavier Torres, Giuseppe Giuliano, Riccardo Sinigaglia, Ruggero Taje and Alessandro Melchiorre. Yuval Avital has specialised as a classical guitar soloist in 19th and 20th century music, concentrating in particular on contemporary music (18 world premiers, two pieces dedicated to him published in Berben and Sikorsky, numerous performances worldwide).

He has staged works, projects and concerts in Israel, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, the Philippines, China, Kazakhstan, Holland, France, Romania, Canada, the USA and Denmark. He has also taken part in radio and television programmes for Radio Rai and Radio Lifegate in Italy, WQXR in the USA, Radio China International and CCTV in China, Radio 1 in the Philippines, and Kol-Hamusica and Chanel 2 in Israel. He acted in the capacity of art director at the Trialogo Festival in Italy in 2006/07. He has performed original works at the following festivals: Notte Bianca (Rome), Festival di Danza (Turin), Festival dei Saperi (Italy), Suoni dell'Altro Mondo (Italy), Rondalla Festival (Philippines), Nyriz 21 (Kazakhstan), The Jerusalem Multimedia Festival (Israel), Miami Art Basel and Design (USA). In October 2008, Avital's Kolot - an icon-sound work for 12 singers mixing electronics and video - made its world debut at the Teatro Cavallerizza in Reggio Emilia, the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan and the TeatroDue in Parma.
