Rashid's notebook features a thin delicate outline. The drawings form a detailed tableau; balancing the authenticity of the artistic gesture and the realm of the outside world. Portraits of women, new objects and furniture sketches are shown in black and fluorescent markers throughout the entire notebook.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1960, but raised in Canada and now practicing in New York, is perhaps best known for bringing his democratic design sensibility to a mass audience. He is a leading figure in the fields of product and interior design, fashion, furniture, lighting and art. He has designed for clients from Alessi to Georg Jensen, Umbra to Prada, Miyake to Method. To date, Rashid has had some 2,000 items put into production and has successfully entered the realm of architecture and interiors as evidenced by the design of the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and Semiramis hotel in Athens which won a Sleep05 European Hotel Design Award.
Rashid was also, for about ten years, an associate Professor of Industrial Design and is now a frequent guest lecturer at universities and gives conferences around the world. Rashid was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2006 from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Other awards include a 2005 Honorary Doctorate from Corcoran College, ID Magazine Annual Design Review Best of Category, and 2003 best Retail Store in the USA. His work is in the permanent collections of 14 Museums worldwide including MoMA and SFMoMA and he exhibits art in various galleries. Rashid has also published many books, including his recent guide to living "Design Your Self' from Regan Books, 'Digipop' a digital exploration of computer graphics (Taschen 2005), a portfolio book published by Chronicle books (2004), He edited the International Design Yearbook 18 for Calmann and King 2003 and has released two CD's on the boutique label, Neverstop.
