In addition to educational seminars and talks led by seasoned collectors, gallery owners and curators, the fair also presented NEXT, a showcase of affordable artwork by emerging artists. Solo Spaces, interspersed throughout the booth map, offered seven artists a spotlight to share individual projects. The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, one of the fair's habitual exhibitors, celebrated the tenth anniversary with the publication of a limited edition print by Toronto-based artist Jason McLean. The 30 four-color silkscreen prints were sold on-site.</p>
<p>To celebrate its decade as the preeminent event in today's Canadian art scene, the 2009 fair paid a special tribute to Canada, highlighting both established and up-and-coming Canadian talents in a flagship exhibition entitled Heartland, curated by artist, educator and museum professional Jeffrey Spalding. The 20+ modern and contemporary works were exhibited thematically, around notions of wilderness, human nature and abstract worlds.</p>

The gallery exhibition of more than seven hundred drawings, paintings, photographs, moving image works, storyboards, puppets and costumes is accompanied by screenings of Burton's features and shorts in the museum's theaters. Both run from November 22, 2009 through April 26, 2010. The exhibition reveals that Burton's dark, quirky, Pop-surrealist themes in film carry over to his rarely-seen drawings as well, all personal marks of the man's distinctive viewpoint.</p>
<p>&nbsp;Burton's first feature, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was released in 1985, after which he went on to direct and produce a number of Academy Award-winning films, including Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and, most recently, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Frequent collaborators are friend and actor Johnny Depp, partner and actor Helena Bonham Carter, composer Danny Elfman, costume designer Colleen Atwood and production designer Rick Heinrichs, all an integral part in the creation of the unmistakable, beloved characters Burton has brought to life through film. </p>

<p>A series of events honoring the filmmaker were held as the retrospective opened at the museum, including the Museum of Modern Art Film Benefit, branded this year as a tribute to the director. A custom 2010 weekly planner was published by Moleskine in a limited run. The books, featuring Tim Burton's signature and the MoMA logo embossed on the cover, were given out to event VIPs. The unique paperband features the names of several of Burton's films, set atop images of one of Burton's earliest characters, Vincent, the star of a 1982 short film created in collaboration with Rick Heinrichs. The film's narrator introduces the boy as a seven year-old who is "always polite and does what he's told / For a boy his age, he's considerate and nice / But he wants to be just like Vincent Price," who, incidentally, is the man behind the voice-over narration, and one of Burton's heroes. </p>]]>

Zeropuntozerozero was looking for an alternative way to publish a special series of <strong>Renato D'Agostin</strong>'s color pictures. Images of a surreal and mysterious New York in the dark. A Moleskine notebook on the desk, the perfect support for a journey into the abyss of night. But something was missing. They were missing people, their observations, feelings, memories. So they decided to ask as many people as they knew personally the same question:</p>
<p><strong>What is Night for you?<br /></strong>Nothing was mentioned about the project in order to have a pure and immediate reaction to the word Night. The only request was to answer in their mother language. Responses flowed in and going through more than two hundred personal answers was an intimate and meaningful experience, a fascinating voyage through the diverse, obscure and shining darkness of the night.<br />In one year , Zeropuntozerozero received and collected responses from all over the world. And thanks to all those "nights," the 0.00 Night notebook was created.&nbsp;</p>

President and Chief Strategist Jill Nykoliation and Creative Directors Barry Quinn, Terry Drummond and Alan Madill bring their complementary expertise to create branding and design for new companies, as well as pointing other, established brands into new directions. Launched in April 2007, Juniper Park has already generated significant buzz in the business, working with clients like Starbucks Coffee, Lay's, Quaker, Virgin Mobile and the Red Cross, and growing from a team of 5 to nearly 60 in just two years. </p>
<p>In July 2009, in a pedestrian tunnel of the Chicago subway system, potatoes began to sprout from the ceiling. Nearby, an ad for Lay's chips declared, "Our potatoes are grown closer than you think." The attention-getting strategy behind the ad was conceived, months before, by the Juniper Park team. <p>The MoMA's Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity exhibition, on view November 8, 2009 through January 25, 2010, is the museum's first major exhibition on the subject since 1938. It features over 400 works reflecting the broad scope of the school's productions, whose influential aesthetic has helped define modern art and modern life. The production of the two Bauhaus-inspired Moleskine products was timed to coincide with the exhibition. Utilizing the simple imagery of a yellow triangle, red square and blue circle, the design of the notebooks and accompanying postcard and sticker set pays tribute to the basic geometric forms and primary colors cherished by Bauhaus faculty and students. The boxed set is on sale at the MoMA Store, marking the official introduction of the box into the Moleskine vocabulary. </p>

Each page of the planner is set alongside a ruled page for notes, and the book counts three woven ribbon markers, making it the perfect tool to mark a day, a museum floor to explore, and a neighborhood to walk around in afterwards. Both the paper band and embossed cover feature a collection of six icons of activity (seeing, writing, photographing, among others), which were also printed as a collection of small, colorful stickers inserted in the book's memo pocket. </p>]]>

<p>Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first West Coast institution devoted to modern and contemporary art. Located just a short walk from downtown San Francisco, their iconic building, designed by Mario Botta in 1995, features a patterned brick facade, topped by a soaring cylindrical turret finished in black and white stone. The interior, flooded with natural light, houses exhibitions culled from their collection of over 26,000 artworks, photographs, and design objects by both modern masters and emerging artists. </p>
<p>Committed to exploring new ways of thinking about museum practice, SFMOMA has launched a variety of special projects in recent years. Among them, the Explore Modern Art Project presents an exceptional online environment to learn about modern and contemporary art. Matters in Media Art is an ongoing research collaboration between the New Art Trust, Museum of Modern Art, SFMOMA, and Tate Modern that is developing guidelines for the care and preservation of time-based media works. SFMOMA is also a participating partner in Steve: The Art Museum Social Tagging Project, in which visitors label images they view with their own keywords, addressing the gap between the way art historians and museum professionals present artwork, and the way it is understood by the general public. </p>
<p>On January 18, 2010, SFMOMA will celebrate its 75th year. A year-long Anniversary Show will bring together more than 400 seminal works from the collection, including work by Frida Kahlo, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Jackson Pollock and Barry McFee, among many others. As visitors explore fresh ways of engaging with art while wandering the SFMOMA galleries, they can now jot down their thoughts or pencil in some sketches in two custom-edition notebooks. </p>

<p>More than 100 internationally recognized architects answered by sending to FAI hundreds of hand drawn works, revealing that contrary to popular belief, the hand is faster than the computer. Now an exhibition organized by FAI- Fondo Ambiente Italiano called "<a href="http://www.moleskine.com/about_us/news/la_mano_dellarchitetto.php">The Hand of the Architect</a>" with 378 autographed drawings were given to FAI as a tribute to Piero Portaluppi, the Milanese architect who designed Villa Necchi Campiglio, beautifully restored and opened to the public by FAI. </p>

<p>Moleskine has designed the catalogue in close collaboration with Abitare/Segesta: it includes all the sketches, as well as biographies and texts from designers, historians and art dealers. The catalogue, a 228 page <a href="http://www.moleskine.com/catalogue/folio/">Moleskine Folio</a> notebook in A4 format is accompanied by a 120 blank page Cahier to be sketched through and through. </p>
<p>After the exhibition, from April 18th to May 10th, the works were put on auction and all proceeds went towards Villa Necchi Campiglio's restoration and upkeep.&nbsp;</p>

Anyone can enter, and anyone can vote, keeping the number of competing artists and jury members constantly in flux. During the submission period, the Art Prize website connects participating artists with potential host venues. If the artist secures a venue to show work, he or she is entered into the competition. The public votes online, and by the end of the process, the top-ranked artist is awarded $250,000, with nine runners-up also going home with prizes.</p>
<p>On a mission to "reboot the conversation between artists and audiences on a grand scale," founder Rick DeVos and Executive Director Jeffrey Meeuwsen have dubbed their endeavor as an "irresistible social experiment." ArtPrize does not contend to be anti-jury, anti-curator or anti-establishment endeavor in any way--it simply wishes to engage the public and artists in an environment where each individual opinion yields a tangible result.</p>

Since its founding, the festival has screened over 1100 films from over 80 countries and generated well over $500 million in economic activity for the city. </p>
<p>A total of 348,000 people attended the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival's 361 screenings, panels, and free community events, which ran from April 22 through May 3. The 2009 festival screened 85 features and 47 short films from 36 countries. The top awards in TFF's competition categories went to About Elly, North, Racing Dreams, and Fixer: The Taking of Amjal Naqshbandi. More awards were handed out for best Shorts (narrative, documentary, and student visionary), Best New York films (Here and There, Partly Private), and Best Actor/Actress, as well as Special Jury Mentions. The 2009 Heineken Audience Award went to the NYC-based comedy City Island. Co-founder Jane Rosenthal reflected at the close of the festival, "I am delighted that we have awarded films from such diverse origins, helping to launch careers, establish names and tell stories that would otherwise not be told. I wish all of the filmmakers continued success and hope that they can continue to bring their works back to Tribeca." Many of the films screened at the 2009 festival were picked up for full theatrical release soon afterward.</p>

<p>Every March, artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from the four corners of the globe convene in New York for what has popularly become known as Armory Week. The year 2009 marked the eleventh edition of the fair, which, for the first time, spread across not one but two piers along the Hudson River, with a total of 243 galleries exhibiting their wares, from contemporary works created exclusively for the occasion to museum-quality historical presentations. A new series of Special Projects featured large-scale works and site-specific installations conceived for display in various public areas during the course of the week. Among them, Louise Nevelson's nine-foot tall Celebration welcomed attendees at Pier 92, and a five-paneled, 50-foot long mural by Kenny Scharf was painted in situ outside Pier 94. </p>
<p>For the past eight years, The Armory Show has commissioned a contemporary artist to produce the visual identity for the fair. In 2009, British artist Ewan Gibbs was chosen, and his meticulous grisaille drawings, featuring iconic images of New York City, set the aesthetic for the show's communication materials. Gibbs initially became known for images of hotel rooms based on photographs he collected from brochures and advertisements. He has since worked on series of baseball players, cities at night, and hotel façades, which have been collected by institutions such as MoMA, the Tate, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Gibbs's characteristic pixel-like marks - the basis of all his graph paper drawings - are embossed on the cover of the custom Moleskine sketchbook produced for the 2009 Armory Show. The books were used as gifts to top gallerists, friends of the Armory Show and the coinciding VOLTA NY fair, and press. They were also available for purchase for a limited time, both at the show and through the bookseller Rizzoli. </p>

Some artworks demand to be loved, while others quietly seduce you. Some works are more reserved than others. A work that you feared was reserved may yet become available again. There will be the inevitable disappointments when the object of ones desire is already spoken for. Owning an artwork can be a magical experience. Whatever trials, tribulations, triumphs, turmoil, or terribly turbulent times you go through, your new artwork will remain a constant in your life and a source of comfort and continuity (unless you are forced to sell it). It will never judge you even though you judge it. You can walk straight past it and it will take no offence. When you return from a vacation it will be there waiting for you. A cherished artwork can become a friend for life. Hopefully this Moleskine notebook will also become a constant companion in your life and bring you pleasure as you fill its pages with reminders and rememberings of things you've been inspired by and those feelings and thoughts you fought with and will forget you thought until you paw and peruse the previous pages pertaining to past profound, poetic, private ponderings. My particular Moleskine preserves for posterity a plentiful plethora of pretentious and preposterous passages and paragraphs of poorly punctuated prattle passed off as playfully polished, proficient prose produced by a professional practitioner of picturesque, picture postcard, pixellated, pointless, pointillist, pen or pencil on printed or plain paper and printed print production. Should you ever be separated from your Moleskine, I hope that it finds its way home. May the pleasure of reuniting you with your precious memories be reward enough for the finder. If not, $100 reward should do the job. </p>
