Born in Hildesheim, Germany in 1977, Lohmann started to collect driftwood on the beach as a child and then made sculpture from it. She graduated in graphic design at the Surrey Institute and she studied design products at the Royal College of Art, London. In 2004 Lohmann showed in the first Design Mart exhibition at the Design Museum, and was one of five featured designers to be awarded a bursary by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and to participate in the Great Brits exhibition presented in Milan in 2005 by the Design Museum and British Council. Her work has since been commissioned by the French National Art Collection, Galerie KREO in Paris and the droog® design group. She won two 'Best of Category IF Design Awards' for both Packaging Design and Ecology at the 2001 IF Design Awards as well as the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. She has now been nominated as one of the four Designer of the Year at DesignMiami 08.She likes to give every object the purpose of being useful. Her work investigates the relationship between industrial production and its waste. The results explore the contemporary issue which leads to giving value to leftovers and considering the contradictions of our planet as a source for the production of objects and furniture with the purpose of erasing the boundary between art and design. Her notebook is an immaculate assemblage of salvaged stones and materials. www.julialohmann.co.uk
