Milan, Italy - Moleskine, the legendary manufacturer of tools for creativity, introduces "The Hand of the Graphic Designer", a collection of 367 original sketches by 108 international graphic designers such as Italo Lupi, Giancarlo Iliprandi, Erik Spiekermann with Matthew Carter, James Clough, Alek Jordan, Atelier Vostok, Fanette Mellier, Esther Lee, Damien Conrad, Milton Glaser, Bob Gill, Pablo Ferro, Bonsaininja, Robert Massin, Martí Guixé, H-Art, Information Architect and more. This volume offers a sampling of the current state of graphic design with an array of significant examples of the art of designing letters, words, signs and images.
"The Hand of the Graphic Designer" is an intimate look into the creative process, that allows the viewer to peer into the sketchbooks of renown graphic designers at the earliest stage of their work, before the mouse comes into action. The general layout has the familiar look of a Moleskine notebook, for a visual connection to the sketchbooks often adopted by designers. The dimensions are those of the A4 Folio collection, with all the iconic features of the Moleskine brand: hard rounded corner cover, elastic band, ribbon place marker. The cover is red. "The Hand of the Graphic Designer" is packaged with a 120-page Moleskine Folio blank drawing book for notes and free hand sketching.
"The Hand of the Graphic Designer" follows the successful publication of "The Hand of the Architect" (2009) and "The Hand of the Designer" (2010). All three publications will soon be also available in digital format on the App Store.
The publication will be released in conjunction with a special exhibition featuring all the original sketches at Villa Necchi Campiglio, during the 2011 Salone del Mobile Furniture Fair in Milan, Italy, starting from April 8, 2011. Following the exhibition, the original works will be auctioned by Sotheby's Milan at Villa Necchi Campiglio on May 12, 2011. Revenues will go to Villa Necchi and to a project run by FAI for the restoration of a series of antique books in the historic library of Masino Castle, a monumental property that FAI owns in the Piedmont region.
Partners of the event: alterstudio partners. Media partner: Abitare Magazine. Main Sponsor: Pirelli. Publishing partner: Moleskine. Curators Francesca Serrazanetti and Matteo Schubert, together with design expert Pietro Corraini.
The exhibition and auction will take place at Villa Necchi Campiglio, a masterpiece of Rationalist architecture built in 1932. Located in the heart of Milan, Villa Necchi Campiglio was designed by the Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi and donated to FAI in 2001 by Gigina Necchi Campiglio and Nedda Necchi. The Villa hosts an important collection of 20th-century Italian paintings donated by Claudia Gian Ferrari as well as a priceless 18th-century collection of paintings, furniture, miniatures, and precious china donated by Alighiero and Emilietta de Michelis . FAI was founded in 1975 by a group of Italian citizens concerned with safeguarding Italy's cultural heritage.
The initiative has also been enhanced by crucial contribution from Pirelli, with patronage of Regione Lombardia, Provincia di Milano, Comune di Milano, AIAP Associazione italiana progettisti per la comunicazione visiva, ADI Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, Cosmit e Fondazione Cosmit Eventi.
