The name was inspired by that of his little sister, Sigurrós (the Rose of Victory) born on the same day. The legend narrates that in six hours they recorded their first single Fljúgðu, which was heard by Björk, who had the piece published in a compilation to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Icelandic independence. The first volume Von (hope) goes back to 1997, the product of three years of work, and critics define it as a kind of ambient journey across Iceland's snowcapped volcanoes. The long-awaited Ágætis byrjun was released in June 1999: a masterpiece that consecrates Sigur Rós. The disc merges the evocative sounds of the rarefaction of the Icelandic landscape with an almost mystical exploration of the voice and the intentionally distorted notes of a guitar. It is said that the harpsichord was found in the street, bent and probably crushed by a car, and that the song was recorded on the basis of the changed sound of this instrument.
For the lyrics, almost all in Icelandic, Jonsi used the so-called "hopelandic" (vonlenska, after the name of the album) which is an invented language the band considers the voice to be a musical instrument, exempt from messages. 2003 saw the creation of the video Untitled 1 (Vaka), written and directed by Floria Sigismondi. The band's fourth album, Takk... (Thank you ...) was released in 2005. The disc cut for EMI is closer to the sonority of Ágætis byrjun than to ( ), and, there appears to be a more accessible inspiration within the melancholy atmospheres than in previous recordings. A limited DVD+CD edition of the soundtrack of the 2002 documentary, Hlemmur, came out in August 2007. This was followed by the DVD Heima on the previous summer's tour of Iceland. Just before the release of the single called Hljómalind, introduction the DVD+CD market was planned, with a number of orchestral pieces from 2002 including Odin's Raven Magic. To promote the film "Heima", the group planned a series of worldwide previews with an acoustic performance on each date. At the end of 2007, with the producer of Nine Inch Nails, the band recorded their fifth album with collections and re-edits of previous numbers. The launching of the album in June Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust: (With a hum in our ears we shall play endlessly) marked a turning point compared with previous records: fewer strings and more guitars and a chorus of young people and an orchestra comprising of 67 instruments.
