Frankfurt Book Fair(October 10-14) promises this year to be much more than a business event, as an impressive artistic and cultural programme is unveiled, along with a series of debates and discussions on some of today's key political and social issues. Frankfurt Buchmesse is the largest book and media event in the calendar and brings together the greatest number of professionals from all sections of the industry, from authors and agents to publishers and booksellers. Furthermore it acts as a forum for discussion of the key issues affecting the industry, and this extends this year more than ever into social and political concerns.
Over 2,500
events have already been confirmed, including award ceremonies, exhibitions and author appearances. Leading writers expected at the Fair include
Richard Dawkins,
Fay Weldon,
Richard Ford,
Elif Shafak,
Umberto Eco,
Nurudin Farrah,
Pierre Bayard and
Zeruya Shalev. This year's Guest of Honour,
Catalan Culture, also promises to deliver an impressive literary programme, with some of the region's talent on display, such as
Maria Barbal,
Quim Monzó,
Jordi Punti,
Baltasar Porcel and Jaume Cabré.
Multicultural dialogue and exchange are at the heart of Frankfurt, as the Fair prepares once again to welcome visitors from a wide range of countries. The International Centre reflects the Fair's diversity, and will be a vibrant meeting place for writers, politicians and academics from all over the world. Highlights will include daily midday "
Literary Encounters", with particular focus this year on the African Continent and a special "Africa Day" being held on the Saturday. The exhibition "
What I always wanted to ask myself" will be world-premiered in the Centre this year, featuring photographs of 70 international authors.
Now in its fifth year the Forum Film and TV is one of the most important meeting places for the book and film industries, as well as a major international market place for trade in film rights. The Forum allows experts and professionals to share their expertise in a series of workshops and seminars, and film fans can enjoy appearances from well-known actors and directors. Another highlight is the annual prize for "
Best International Literary Film Adaptation", this year awarded to British director Michael Winterbottom for
